Part of being a homeowner, and mainly an impatient person, is learning how to remedy your mistakes...impatience and new projects may result in many!:)
Exhibit A: Perfectly fine vintage mailbox, white with lovely design...
Exhibit B: Metal paint from the local hardware store. Advice from the 17 yr old employee, check, feeling life will improve when my beautiful red mailbox is complete, check.
Exhibit C: An example of the attempted red painted mailbox, I was not brave enough to take a picture of my mailbox after this and I must say it did not look as "rustic chic" as this. I am sure my mail man thought a very gruesome murder may have taken place on my mailbox.
Exhibit D: Metal Paint remover. After receiving all the disgusted looks and disapproval (probably rightly so) I could take from the wonderful lady at the local hardware store after explaining my dilemma we conclude starting from scratch is the only option for redemption of my poor poor mailbox. This stuff is not for messing around, wear heavy duty gloves, maybe even goggles, and do it outside! It may take several coats to fully remove the paint, but trust me, it will dissolve it all!
Exhibit E: The genious way to paint metal;) Once all the terrible nightmare metal paint was removed I simply sprayed a couple layers of this bad boy onto my mailbox and....
Wala! A not so perfectly painted mailbox!
Notes to self: 1.Maybe white was a fine color to begin with. 2. The 17yr old employee does not always know what he/she is talking about.
Notes to others: 1. Metal paint can be trickier than one might assume. 2. The color on the can may not match exactly once applied to your project (i.e. I was aiming for a burgundy or maroon, the helpful lady and I determined by the color on the can this was it, as you can tell it is a little more...Christmas:)
Best of luck to all in home projects!!!
